Black Mussel

Mytilisepta virgata

Often attach and bind together on rocky structure to form a mussel bed.

Unlike gastropods like snails which attach themselves using strong muscular feet to the shore, mussels secrete a bundle of filaments called byssus (also known as “beard” in daily usage) and attach themselves to surfaces on the shore.

Mussel bed create a complex structure allowing other intertidal species such as crabs to seek shelter and food.
